Black Cab Insurance is the clear leader in terms of providing the best deal for cab owners. This company is not a government owned company, it is privately owned and it is well ahead of the others in providing insurance coverage for taxi owners. Even though they are privately owned they opened their services to many insurance risks service such as the private cab insurance, public cab insurance, contract hire insurance policy as well as the hackney policy can also be quoted for in the company.

They also cover insurance liability services for both public liability and local authority related insurance liability. Because they cover wide range of services they also break down the insurance policy down to the level it could be affordable to most people. The method of payment for the premiums is also reduced to the level nobody will complain of affordability. The premiums which they provide can also be paid in installments.

To become a private hire driver or minicab driver you normally have to pass a test administered by the Driving Standards Agency. Depending on where you live the first thing to do is to go to your licensing authority which is usually the Town Hall where you live and get an application form. Different rules apply in different areas, but several things are the same.

You will have to obtain an Enhanced Disclosure form from the Criminal Records Bureau and normally you will be expected to have a clean driving licence. You will be assisted in doing this by the licensing agency. If you have a criminal record this does not automatically disbar you from becoming a minicab driver, as it depends on the seriousness of your conviction and how long ago it was. Equally if you have points on your driving licence it depends on the motoring offence and its seriousness, but again you will not be automatically disbarred from becoming a minicab driver.

The test for a minicab driver typically takes 35-40 minutes and will be in the conditions you would normally be expected to be driving in. In addition to being tested on your practical driving skills you will be asked specific questions about the best routes to take from A to B in your area and you will be expected to be able to describe a route from some of the main landmarks in that area. You will be asked questions related to the Private Hire Saloon Highway Code also. You will have to pay for this test and prices vary from city to city so you should check these out when you collect your application pack.

You will need to have a medical examination, and may be able to have this with your own GP or the licensing authority will specify a doctor for you to book an appointment with. A minicab driver needs to have a high standard of medical fitness just as does a bus or coach driver or a driver of a large goods vehicle. If you suffer from a serious heart disease, poor eyesight, epilepsy or insulin treated diabetes then these illnesses would disqualify you from becoming a licensed minicab driver.

You need to have had a full driving licence for at least a year and some licensing authorities want you to have had one for three years minimum. You will need to have a current full licence issued by the DVLA, Northern Ireland or European Economic Area (EEA).

Before you decide to go ahead with your application to be a minicab driver, you should do some research and try to find a job with a minicab company, as you don’t want to give up your job and then find that you can’t make ends meet as a minicab driver. There may already be more than enough in your area. Do some research and talk with private hire drivers to find out exactly what your financial position is likely to be.

Of course all vehicles on a public highway in the UK need to be insured. Taxis are no exception; in fact they need to have completely different insurance policies because they carry members of the public in return for payment. To apply for insurance, taxis and their drivers must be licensed by the appropriate authorities, e.g. the local council in which the taxi operates. All types of taxi can be insured: – minicabs, black cabs, private hire cabs, and public hire ones, but they all need specific types of cover.

There are two types of taxi insurance in the UK; private hire, usually minicabs operating from a taxi office which pick up passengers at a time and place that has been prearranged, and public hire insurance for taxis such as black cabs which can be hailed on the street.

If you decide to go for a quote online, you will be asked some questions and depending on your answers, you can be given a quote and pat online if you accept it. However you should take some time to read the documents you are presented with very carefully before accepting any quote.

Some insurance companies would prefer you to phone and get a quote so that ny policy would be tailored to suit your needs. For example, if you have a clean driving record in your own vehicle and are a new taxi driver, you can benefit from your previous clean record. If you have held a taxi badge for 12 months, then you also qualify for a discount on the premium you will have to pay. There are also discounts available for drivers who have previously been employed as company drivers.

There are several types of taxi insurance which are the same as for other vehicles – Comprehensive, Third Party Fire and Theft and Third Party only. Remember that third party insurance does not cover you or your car. Some insurers will offer you a policy which guarantees you a replacement taxi in case you have an accident and your taxi is off the road for any period of time.

To be sure you get the best deal out there, talk to other taxi drivers and ask who they are insured with, and how much their premiums are. Are they satisfied with the level of cover they have? Then go online and see what is on offer, and ring up insurers who seem to be offering the best quotes to see if they can give you extra discounts. Find insurers that specialise in taxi insurance, so you know that you are dealing with experts in the field.

Finally, check the small print very carefully and if you don’t understand anything at all, ask questions and clarify your doubts. There are people who can help you with this, for example, your Citizen’s Advice Bureau. Don’t be afraid to ask for help with the small print as well. You don’t want to have to pay for hidden extras, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you are a mini cab owner, you will need to have adequate insurance cover in place, similar to car insurance but specialist mini cab insurance.

Why should mini cabs be insured?
Mini cabs are often targeted by thieves because they get paid mostly by cash. This can be an extremely upsetting time and other valuables can also be stolen. In the past mini cab drivers have been robbed for money, jewellery, satellite navigation systems, mobile phones and other items. If a mini cab firm deals with mostly the higher class society providing luxury vehicles, they can also be targeted as well as the passengers they carry. Mini cabs are also targeted by yobs who love nothing more than to stir up trouble and going for a joy ride. In some cases mini cabs can be completely destroyed by thugs setting it alight and in other cases they can have some minor damage such as scratches and small dents. In very rare occasions have mini cabs been stolen for use in fraudulent activities such as robberies and hit and run, but it is possible.

Just like cars, the level of protection available for mini cabs are the same i.e. third party only, third party, fire and theft and also fully comprehensive insurance. Due to the fact that mini cab drivers solely rely on passengers to book them for their travel needs the chances of driver liability are higher so insurance premiums are generally more than standard vehicles. When an insurer quotes you, they will do a risk assessment. They take into account mini cabs will do triple the national mileage average and will drive all hours of the day with a lot of time spent in traffic. Accidents are most likely to happen during peak hours and this is when mini cabs are most needed to help clients get from A to B.

There are now many taxi brokers that promise to get you a good fair deal but as we all know brokers will add a small fee for their services. It’s best to contact at least 5 different mini cab insurance companies that specialise in this area of motoring. Premiums are likely to be lower and customer service will be better as they deal with mini cabs day to day. Going with a mini cab insurance company will also ensure that all claims are handled quickly and with expert knowledge as they have built a reputation in this field. Remember that your taxi or black cab is your way of earning a living and you should do everything in your power to make sure that your mini cab is adequately covered for unforseen circumstances.
